Hackers hit the movie theaters in 1995, the internet was still in its infancy and hacking was sub-culture a few knew or spoke about. The film was the first incarnation of hacking on the silver screen post-internet. It told the story of famed hacker "Zero Cool" aka Dade Murphy known for crashing of 1,507 systems in one day got him banned from owning or operating a computer until he was eighteen. Dade eventually meets a group of hackers at his new school. The novice of the group Joey, inadvertently uncovers The Plague's scheme to steal 25 million dollars from his company. This prompts the Plague to enlists the Secret Service under false pretenses, in order to protect prevent his scheme from being discover. Thus a race ensues, as the Dade and his cohorts attempt to reveal The Plague's plot before the Secret Service catches up to them and put all of them in jail.

He also starred in the creepy thriller Swimfan alongside Erika Christensen. Today, he plays Chris on the ABC television comedy series Guys With Kids.

<![CDATA[A Hackers Fascination with Lock-Picking]]> http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/posta-hackers-fascination-with-lock-picking http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/posta-hackers-fascination-with-lock-picking Fri, 15 Mar 2013 00:00:00 GMT It's human nature to wonder how things work. As children we're in a constant state of curiosity, we began as toddlers presented with the task of correctly placing geometrically shaped pegs into their corresponding holes. It is here where we first learn every object has it proper place. As we get older our inquiring mind becomes obsessed with investigating how things work. We become amateur surgeons, dissecting the toaster or the television, carefully examining its parts, before attempting to reconstruct it's in proper working order.

Many of us hackers found ourselves romanced into hacking by our unyielding thirst to understand computers and technology. We found ourselves reinvigorated with the curiosity of our childhood, enthralled, with the fact that we were finally being presented with a subject whose level of complexity perfectly challenged our enthusiastic inquisitiveness. Seems only natural that hackers would be interested in locks and physical security. Lock-picking is essentially the kinesthetic equivalent of hacking. As hackers, we are aware of the vulnerabilities of the cyber securities enacted to protect our virtual valuables. Locksmiths are equally aware of the vulnerabilities within the physical securities we've constructed to protect our tangible valuables. It's at this junction of security and vulnerability where the two crafts of find common ground.

The second level on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is security. Perhaps the most indicative detail of human history that proves Maslow correct is the consistent presence of locks dating back to the earliest civilizations. If one were to follow the evolution of locks, one would immediately notice that over time locks have become increasingly more complex. I would formally wonder what was the catalyst that spurred the evolution of locks, only to find the answer staring at me in the mirror. Hackers! The first hackers where the crafty fellows who figured out how to pick locks. Motives aside, their intuitiveness was commendable to say the least, and essentially built the tradition to which we all belong.

There is some inherent pleasure for hacker to successfully pick a lock, more so than that of a person of probably any other background. I would compare it to the pleasure an architect might get from building a bird house from scratch. There is something viscerally satisfying about mechanical completion of task normally done mentally or virtually. Even if hackers take on lock-picking may always remain on a hobbyist level, it still strengthens our understanding of physical security and provides a refreshing feeling of accomplishment when you feel the pins in the lock meet the sheer line and the lock turns and opens.

Stock levels

This is a new feature we wanted to implement to let our users have the ability to see how high or low stock is on an item at any time. There are items we constantly reorder then there are the limited editions and runs that will never be produced again -- we feel its important to give you an inside look at our system so that you can get that item you wanted in time before it runs out forever.

We have a lot of new features for the site in the works - If you think we're missing something shoot us a message or leave a comment on Facebook. We will keep it in mind as we expand the site to be even more awesome!

We offer all different shipping options on HackerStickers.com but its important to take into account how soon you need your shipment. With the holiday rush things start to get bogged down at the post office so that shipping method you normally use may take a little longer.

First off, lets talk about parcel post -- It's slow and there isn't any sort of tracking on it. Depending on where you are from our shipping location will depend on how quickly the package moves, and even with that… is it worth the dollar or two you are saving on shipping?

First Class is the most common way to ship items when it weighs under a certain amount but during the season it slows down a bit, and the closer you get to Christmas the slower and more risky it gets to get to the destination in time. Order now to ensure quick shipment and avoid the rush!

Priority Mail - This is our favorite, its a decent price and it gets the package to you pretty darn quick - usually within 1-3 days. But keep in mind you still want to order sooner than later as it gets closer to Christmas you want to ensure the geeks in your life get your gifts in time!

Express Mail - Drop everything the post office is doing and deliver that package to you! It's way more expensive but a good method to get items to you in a rush! Sometimes you just need the items fast and thats the end of it -- this is the method you want!

<![CDATA[Keeping an Eye on Big Brother]]> http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/postkeeping-an-eye-on-big-brother http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/postkeeping-an-eye-on-big-brother Tue, 27 Nov 2012 00:00:00 GMT There's a story behind every piece of artwork we use for our clothing line. It all starts with an idea that turns into a sketch.
In the HackerStickers office we have many of these originals framed for those who visit to see how it transformed from the idea into the final product. The Big Brother t-shirt was modeled off of the idea that we're already being watched so much that it's time to keep an eye on big brother ourselves.

The artwork portrays a group of hackers surrounded by the government and their surveillance equipment. The hackers are using the same systems the government created to watch the agency themselves.

The artist took great pleasure in creating an image detailed with easter eggs to make any fed, hacker or security expert laugh.

If you're a believer in privacy or hacking surveillance systems this piece of artwork is available on cotton canvas (aka t-shirts & long sleeve ) as well as a nice big brother poster for your wall.

ToorCon San Diego has been happening for 14 years now, a centralized convention for hackers and security folks alike to learn and discuss the latest in the industry.

We shared exhibitor convention space with the lock pick village, tamper evidence contest and Ada's technical bookstore popup shop.. meeting lots of great people and learning new 'security' techniques.

This was the first in many years it had moved locations, now at the Westin San Diego it felt much more personable and was nice to be moved away from the cold-feeling convention center where people would walk a while to get back to their rooms. Very nice to have it centralized and everyone so close!

We had a blast hanging out with our hacker friends from LA, OC, SD, the surrounding 2600 meetings and Irvine Underground, and look forward to the next ToorCon!

<![CDATA[Our First HOPE Conference - 2004 flashback]]> http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/postour-first-hope-conference-2004-flashback http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/postour-first-hope-conference-2004-flashback Mon, 15 Oct 2012 00:00:00 GMT We had done different hacker conferences, but they had generally been close to home. None of us had been to HOPE conference before but was familiar with the name as it's a hacker con thrown by 2600 magazine - the hacker quarterly. We took to New York City to attend our first HOPE conference back in July 2004.

We were small, the idea of shipping things never even entered our minds and back then each person could fly with 2 bags on the airline we flew so we packed a personal bag each and the rest of the luggage was the swag to setup shop with.

We got to NYC and headed straight to the taxi line, we told the driver that we may not all fit due to the weight of our luggage but he was certain he wanted us and he loaded up his mini van with our 10 suitcases and we piled in. A few miles on the freeway with a lot of bumps we heard the taxicab start to fall apart -- and then suddenly something was dragging on the ground.

The cabs suspension was shot and the axel was dragging on the freeway. We pulled over on the side of the road, the driver was upset his cab was broken, and we were upset his car broke. Without any delay one of the guys in our crew went to his luggage and grabbed supplies to tie his car back together. Within minutes we were ready to go again -- the MacGyver style move wouldn't be a permanent fix but we made it to the hotel.

Once we got checked in we went to the conference area and setup our booth. We had a warm welcome from the east coast hackers and got to showcase our wares. Throughout the weekend we heard some great talks and met a lot of great people -- many we still see at events on the west coast! We've returned since 2004 and look forward to the next show!

<![CDATA[How HackerStickers Began]]> http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/posthow-hackerstickers-began http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/posthow-hackerstickers-began Tue, 09 Oct 2012 00:00:00 GMT HackerStickers wasn't always as big as it is today. In fact it started like many businesses out of the apartment home with a small idea starting from a hobby.

I had a friend that owned a sticker business, one of those kiosks at the mall that makes custom stickers, the kind you see on the back of people's cars. I did a bulk purchase of two sticker designs and manufactured one t-shirt. With these the few items I went to a convention and sold the heck out of them, and they sold pretty well. After the conference I tallied up all the numbers and a profit was made!

DC 9 Shirt

The only problem was that these conferences didn't happen weekly -- what to do with the leftover supplies? We contacted a few larger businesses that had websites setup that we thought could liquidate the merchandise fairly quick. We hit a wall though, one company wanted to obtain the rights to the artwork and print the merchandise themselves leaving us with the remaining stock whereas others revenue share wasn't high enough to make it worthwhile.

I never thought of starting my own online business retailing 'hacker swag' until then. And HackerStickers was built focusing on stickers for laptops and cars. One design after another we kept adding stickers and people kept ordering. We expanded over time adding products besides stickers such as hardware kits, t-shirts, hats, then glassware.

We returned annually to the different hacker conventions getting our name out and sponsoring events. Since then with our loyal followers, fans and addicts we have grown and have been blessed to meet many great folks to give us the opportunity to keep at it, hacking away at new ideas, promoting cool tools and helping educate the hacker and security community.

More to follow!

When we first started Hacker Stickers we didn't have much inventory and stickers were light enough to move in and out, then we expanded to start selling shirts. The first few conventions moving in and out was manageable but as years passed and the inventory continued to grow it became a pain moving everything in and out up and down the stairs each time.

The time had come where decisions had to be made, we had just brought on a new vendor for us to start selling their swag and we had 10 new designs printed for a convention. We had officially ran out of space to put anything and moving up and down those stairs was becoming brutal.

Rather than moving the truck full of merchandise back up the stairs the truck remained loaded and we migrated to a new office, located in a secure facility and on the first floor complete with warehouse space, offices and loading doc. It took a while to get everything back together. First the shelving needed to be reconstructed, then the merchandise had to be organized, inventoried and labeled. We're thankful for everyone who helped out with the move and getting the office back together! It was definitely hard but we are back up to speed!

What's to come? We are taking pictures of all the new, forgotten, and limited edition items, plugging in the inventory and putting them live on the site. I'm sure by now many of you have seen all the neat DEFCON swag we've added, we have a ton more so keep checking back and follow us to keep up with the latest items.

Here's to the future!
Thank you all for being great supporters!

<![CDATA[DEFCON 20 Recap]]> http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/postdefcon-20-recap http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/postdefcon-20-recap Wed, 26 Sep 2012 00:00:00 GMT DefCon 20 (aka Defcon XX) was the biggest hacker convention ever and we had a lot of planning ahead of us this year. We were asked by Defcon to be the official swag vendor selling off the remainder defcon swag from prior years and years to come.

With that we were offered a different booth space, years prior we had our A-Frame PVC constructed booth that would lean against the wall that would tower 25 feet tall covered with our camouflage tarp displaying our latest products. We had 3 tables side by side with space underneath the tables for storage and shelving located against the wall within the a-frame for additional space.

The space we were offered this year was front and center, great for the eyes and great traffic. But we had to go back to the drawing board for our booth design as the space was different. No walls to lean our tower against and the space although more tables was less storage space and our signage had to be created from scratch.

We sketched out a few designs and came up with the idea of hanging our signage above our booth space in two layers in a square format visible from all sides The top square layer would be the signs, eye catching that would bring people to our booth. The second layer, closer to the ground would showcase our latest products. Each side had products displayed, and beneath the 2nd layer was an optional third layer of poster board signs promotion our new products.

First we created the artwork for the vinyl pieces that would become the square sign layer at top. We printed them and allowed for lightweight pvc poles to go through them to connect to one another with 90 degree brackets forming the square at both the top and bottom.

The unit was connected to the grid above by the convention staff and lifted above our booth center. The second layer was attached and the products were fastened with only a few minutes before the doors opened.

We received such positive feedback about our display and products this year from people who had attended for years and many new people. We look forward to next year where we can implement some changes and new ideas to the display!

Hope you enjoyed this post and photographs!

<![CDATA[We lived through yet another DEFCON!]]> http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/postdefcon-over http://www.hackerstickers.com/blog/postdefcon-over Thu, 02 Aug 2012 00:00:00 GMT We survived yet another DEFCON filled with great people, talks, and parties! We literally packed up 75%+ of the office for everyone there to grab the gear they wanted and are now tediously putting our office back together and re-inventorying everything, so please allow a little extra time on shipping your new orders. We understand that you want your sweet gear and caffeine ASAP but we need to find it first! :)

We'd like to thank everyone who stopped by the booth to say hi, pick up gear or have a drink with us! You guys are the motivation we needed to wake up after only 3 hours of sleep a night!

See you at DEFCON 21.
